Everyone had gone home for the night, leaving the three twenty-somethings alone with over two billion dollars in tech. True, if not for those three researchers, the tech wouldn’t even be viable. But here they were, marveling over their designs and wondering who would be the first to use it.
 
“I dare you to grow,” said Tabby, holding up one of the matter manipulation bands—the SSBs—to her boyfriend, Shawn.
 
He’d thought about it for a long time—for the entirety of the project, in fact. The concept of changing size had always fascinated him but when presented with the reality of it, he wasn’t so sure. It was scary, but also exciting.
 
“Why don’t you grow?” asked Micah. He was their assistant researcher—what Tabby would’ve called a “fuck boy” in college. But he was attractive enough for Shawn and Tabby to have a little unspoken fun with—when the mood was right.
 
Tabby said, “Oh, I intend to grow, for sure. But which one of my boys do I want to go with me?”
 
There were only two SSBs. Each one was over a billion dollars but to anyone involved in the project—or anyone who knew about it—the price tag was well worth it. Put one on and change your size to whatever you wanted. Well, whatever the operator wanted. As of now, the bands couldn’t be used independently.
 
“Maybe we should flip a coin,” said Micah, and he turned to Shawn. “Me and you. Heads, I grow. Tails, you grow.”
 
“Fine by me,” said Shawn. It would be fun either way. He had a few ideas up his sleeve . . .
 
Tabby was the one who presented a coin. After she pulled her hair up and secured it away from her neck, she held up the coin and tossed it in the air. Quickly, she snatched it and slapped it against the back of her hand. The boys crowded around, eagerly waiting for her to reveal it.
 
Heads.
 
Micah threw his hands up and laughed. “Yeah, baby! I’m gonna get big!”
 
“Not just you,” said Tabby, already fastening the SSB around her wrist.
 
Shawn went through all the preliminary work—checking blood pressure, heart rate, and neural link with the band. Tabby and Micah already knew what to do. They’d been living this project for the past year.
 
“How about we make this interesting?” said Shawn. This garnered a raised eyebrow from his girlfriend.
 
“Go on,” she said.
 
“Since I’m the one controlling your size, how about we turn it into a game.”
 
“I like that,” said Micah. “What kind of game?”
 
“I’ll give you tasks to perform . . . and if you do a good job, I’ll zap you a little bigger.”
