Jimmy and Madison had been married for almost as long as they’d been working at Macrosity Inc. She was one of the lead researchers for a team investigating how atoms moved when heavy magnets were applied, and he was an intern who was bumped up to researcher once he’d finished his degree. They worked in a small lab, only six people after Ginger, Madison’s friend and head researcher left, but the work they were doing would put them on the map within the next two years.
 
Jimmy loved work, but some days it was rather difficult when Amy was in a mood. She’d dated Madison years ago, long before he’d ever been in the picture, and sometimes it was a little awkward with the two women in the same room. Madison had no ill feelings toward her, but Jimmy wasn’t so sure that was reciprocated. Sometimes Amy gave her a lustful look, and sometimes gave Jimmy the cold shoulder. But most days, things were fine. They were all so engrossed in the work that they barely had time for anything else.
 
Currently they were developing a prototype matter reducer, or as everyone in the lab called it, the Shrink Ray. The project had been going on for almost a decade—changing hands, changing teams who could make progress and move the ball forward, so to speak. Madison’s team, with the help of her friend Ginger, nailed down a new type of power supply, a synthetic purple crystal that was called Halo-6 in-house. After Madison started building her designs around the crystal (which was easily produced in the lab) the tests started to show more promise.
 
On the morning of the first human test, Amy came downstairs just as Madison and Jimmy were setting up. She had her coffee cup in hand, her high heels clacking noisily on the tile. She passed up her friends and looked into the testing chamber where sat a single desk chair.
 
“Who’s the lucky guy or gal?” she asked.
 
“Brad,” said Jimmy. “He’s the only one who we could get a good blood pressure reading on.”
 
“Brad, huh? He’s hot. Bet he’s got a huge dick, too. This technology sure does emasculate them, huh?”
 
Madison just rolled her eyes. “It’s not like he’ll be stuck that way.”
