Excerpt:
Zurich Airport didn’t feel like an airport so much as it felt like a controlled environment, designed to make travel seem effortless. It was all quiet by intention—glass walls, pale wood, brushed metal. The crowds moved with hushed discipline, voices low, footsteps softened by the carpet. It wasn’t what one would call sensory overload—just calm efficiency that made Scott feel even more out of sync.
He’d been awake too long to appreciate it.
He sat alone in the first-class lounge, slouched into a leather chair that hid all but the top of him. His eyes burned with the dry, gritty ache that came from sleeping in fragments rather than hours.
It was late afternoon, sliding into evening, and a few other travelers scattered into the lounge. They sat just far enough apart to pretend they were alone. In the back, the espresso machine murmured softly. Ahead of him, a wall of windows that looked out onto the runways, as if it were just a model airport behind glass.
He’d come to Zurich from Singapore, a mistake he was already paying for. The trip hadn’t been optional because meetings had been stacked back-to-back and late dinners turned into late negotiations. A red-eye out of Changi after a week of twelve-hour days and sleep stolen in ninety-minute chunks. In Switzerland, he had just enough time to shower, change, and sit through one final face-to-face before turning around and doing it all again.
And now, he was headed to Canada, where he’d be dropped into a new time zone with no mercy.
He was vaguely aware that someone had sat down across from him. No sound, no polite throat-clearing. It was like she’d always been there and Scott was the one who was just now arriving.
“You look like someone who’s had too many drinks . . . or maybe not enough.” Her voice was sweet, almost reassuring. It made him laugh before he even looked up.
Seated across from him was a woman who was probably tall, given her shape, but impossible to tell from how she was seated. Her hair was a cool ash-blond, pulled back neatly at the nape of her neck. A few strands had escaped near her temples, softening a face that otherwise gave very little away.
She wore a tailored dark coat over a simple blouse and trousers. No jewelry beyond a slim watch at her wrist. No visible branding, nothing that invited comment.
When she saw Scott hanging on her words, she smiled, which changed the entire countenance of her face. She extended a hand across the table and said, “I’m Elena.”
