Samantha was pissed. Not only did her father uproot her from a school she loved—friends, good restaurants, a movie theater, a boyfriend—and moved her onto his base, situated in mountains above Denver, Colorado, but he also did it over the weekend she was supposed to go out with said friends and boyfriend.
 
There was nothing for her here. She had no friends, no people really her own age, and certainly no boyfriend. She couldn’t even make calls. Something on the base jammed all outgoing signals. Even the Wi-Fi that was allowed was heavily monitored and most sites blocked. For every website that she could access, there were ten that she could not.
 
At least the base had a library, even if most of the books were military in nature. She loved to read, even if it were those boring books. There were no televisions, at least none hooked up to cable. She could access training videos, but that was it. For the most part, she stayed in her room and watched these boring vids on a loop, but that was mostly to have background noise while she read an equally boring book.
 
She hated it here. It was unbearable most days because she should have been out there living her life. Instead, she was here because when she was seventeen last year, she couldn’t keep from fighting. Other girls always seemed to have a problem with her and Sam didn’t have the best control of her temper. So what did dad do? He brought her here where she couldn’t get in trouble. It didn’t matter that she was eighteen. Her decisions were still being made for her.
 
Sam had no friends here, other than Tim, one of the researchers down in the lab—a place where she’d only been to once, and that was with her father and two upper members from the science team. Tim was her only exit to the outside, her only source of news, entertainment, and food that didn’t come from MRE pouches. Sam was a prisoner here, at least that’s how it felt. But Tim was on her side, even though he wore military fatigues beneath his lab coat.
 
It also helped that Tim had a crush on Sam. She was an attractive girl, leaning slightly on the goth side, but most men could see through the makeup, the wild purple hair and the tall boots with buckles to the top. Sam had an amazing body that she made sure Tim saw by the way she wore her clothes. The Colorado base was freezing, but if she knew she’d see Tim that day, she made sure to wear the tightest thing in her closet.
