Just a couple of days ago, Krista assumed she was one of the tallest girls in the world. At least in the country, anyway. Standing at six-foot-six, she towered over most men. But coming to Angel Grove had humbled her greatly. She wasn’t the tallest girl—not by far. In fact, she was probably the shortest girl in town, even amongst those much younger than her. She stared across the breakfast table—a table that was much too high for her ‘tiny’ body—to her new girlfriend, Anna. Anna dwarfed Krista, standing at an unthinkable eight-foot-one, but even Anna was considered short in Angel Grove. Her daughters, Emily and Jenny, were both much taller.

“I think I got a little taller overnight,” said Jenny, the youngest girl. She grinned and guzzled a pitcher-sized glass of orange juice. “My pajama legs don’t touch the floor this morning. And the dress . . . just doesn’t feel right.”

Anna laughed. “You might be having growth spurts, but certainly not that fast.”

“No, really,” said Jenny, standing. “Measure me?”

“No way that you are taller,” said Emily, the eldest girl, who looked at her younger sister with a mixture of jealousy and disbelief.

“Girls, we can settle this right now,” said Anna, pushing out from the table. Her feet hit the floor with a solid thump and then she moved to a low cabinet and found a tape measure. After that, she climbed back into the seat, then stood on it. On cue, Jenny stood straight as an arrow as her mother fed the tape measure to the floor, then held the other end at her head. Anna’s eyes said it all.

“You . . . are taller. You’re eight-eleven.”

“Two inches?” said the girl, positively beaming.

“How is that possible?” asked Krista. None of them had an answer for her, as it was unprecedented even in a community of giants. Anna shrugged. “I told you. The next generation is getting even taller. We have no idea how tomorrow will look.”

“Me next,” said Emily, smoothing her dress and standing. She was the biggest one in the house, so it was easy for her to gently nudge Jenny out of the way so she could be measured. “Nope, still the same since your last physical. Ten-foot-two.”

“It’s like I’ve stopped growing,” said the big girl as she moved back to her seat. A look of defeat crossed her face.

Anna sat down and placed the tape measure on the table. She nodded. “It’s possible. You’re at the right age where this might be it, kiddo.”
