When Isaac walked into the lab early that morning, he wasn’t expecting his wife Lucy to already be there, ready to work. She’d been extra stressed lately because things were going so well. And because things were going so well, that meant change was just on the horizon. Higher-ups would be taking more notice, there’d be additional grant money—and additional responsibility to go with it. But perhaps worst of all, the current facility wouldn’t be up to standard. No, they would move the whole project elsewhere, and it was a gamble if whether or not they’d be allowed to go with it.
 
“Did you start a test already?” he asked, putting her cup of coffee on the console and hugging her around the waist. She was looking at the large bank of computer screens in front of her and barely noticed him.
 
“I did. And it worked. It works every time now that we isolated the right molecule. Check it out.” She pointed right ahead, to the glass enclosure where sat a sleeping, tabby-colored cat. Only this one was several sizes larger than the average cat. Currently this housecat was the same size as a Bengal Tiger. It stretched out, spreading its toes, then rolled over onto its side, not knowing or not caring about the radical transformation of its body.
 
“How long did it take this time?”
 
“Almost instantly. We barely had time to get the needle out. We have to tweak that a little,” she said, rolling her chair around to face him.
 
“My brilliant wife,” he said, then planted a kiss on her forehead.
 
She stood up, took him by the hand and pulled him down the corridor, near the cafeteria.
 
“Where are we going?” he asked playfully.
 
“We’re up early,” she said, waving her hand toward the bank of windows to their left. “No one is in the labs, no one in the cafeteria. Let’s go fuck in the closet.”
 
“Are you serious?”
 
“Why not? We have before.”
