Excerpt:
“It just looks like a pile of junk,” said Candace, looking over her boyfriend’s newest purchase.
“It came from the military lot this time,” said Phil. “There has to be something good inside. We just need to clean it out first.” He rubbed a hand across his bald head, leaving a sweaty and grimy handprint.
“Well one of us has a job to do. So have fun.”
It was a jab that she regretted right after she said it because he had been rather depressed since his company had let him go and he’d been forced to find work at the nearby garage. Phil had worked for a shipping company and when most of the jobs went overseas, his position had been cut. Nevermind that he’d been with the company for over twelve years—when the higher-ups wanted you out, out you went. Sure, it didn’t help that he had a checkered past and that there was the real possibility that he could serve hard time in the future, but wasn’t it discrimination to hold something like that against an employee? But Phil lived with his head in the clouds and she couldn’t make him understand the reality of their money situation.
So just like a normal person played the lottery, Phil bought shipping containers at auction. Many times they were empty. Sometimes they had a few odds and ends that Candace could turn around and sell on eBay. They hardly made back the money he spent but at least it was keeping him busy while she went to her crappy 9 to 5 job so they could keep putting food on the table. She loved her man so much, but how she wished he’d make better decisions. She wished she’d made better decisions, too.
She hated her job. It wasn’t much, just waiting tables at a seafood diner in town. The tips were good, but the people were awful to deal with, especially the older men who came in at lunch time and ogled her while she took orders. And then there were the Saturday nights when the frat boys would come in before heading to their bar of choice to get drunk. She hated almost all people outside of Phil and always half-jokingly said that the world needed a new plague. He wholeheartedly agreed.
Both of them had a criminal record. Hers was mostly peppered with assault while his was heavy on grand theft auto and armed robbery. It was amazing that either of them were out, mingling with the general public, but good lawyers were a godsend. They’d both gotten off on a wide range of technicalities, but that wasn’t an automatic dismissal of all crimes. Each had a pending court date in the next few months.
