Miles’s Journal 10/20/21

I got to meet Valerie Wu today.

During my layover I was told to expect a tall girl—who would only get taller as the weeks went by, if the data was reliable. I’d entered a small room, much like an interrogation room, and waited. And when they finally did bring her to me, it was almost subtle enough to miss. She was a tall girl, but nothing that warranted all the security and red tape.

I stood, meeting the Asian girl at the door as two uniformed men brought her in. She appeared to be the same size as me—six feet—but perhaps an inch or two shorter. This wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, just out of the ordinary for her. She hadn’t been this size for long. She was finding the scale odd, perhaps disorienting.

“Valerie Wu?” I said. “I’m Miles Perkins. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you, too,” she said, and allowed me to lead her to the desk. I waved off the uniforms but one of them, a man with name RILEY on his patch, insisted on staying.

“One of us has to always be present when she’s with a specialist.”

“Okay,” I said, and shut the door. She wasn’t violent, only curious. But I was here to make sure that her curiosity didn’t blossom into anything . . . undesirable.

“Can I ask you a few questions? I know you’ve probably answered them all a hundred times, but it would help bring me up to speed.”

“Sure,” she said, and took a sip from the water sitting in front of her. Perhaps it was the size of the cup, or maybe even my own imagination, but I thought it looked tinier than it should have. Then again, I was primed to see an abnormally large girl. So far, she wasn’t it. Although she was strikingly beautiful with her sleek black hair, slanted eyes, and sharp chin.

“What is your normal height?”

“I’m five-foot-two,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“And what is it right now?”

“Six foot even, although that could’ve changed by now. They haven’t measured me this morning.” She turned to Riley and said, “I’m taller than you now, huh big guy?”
