Haleigh had never been in this part of the building, but Jennifer said it was okay for today since Haleigh had been selected to test one of their new products. It was amazing how big the complex was, and how many people actually worked here. Bryson Inc. was unlike any other start-up company she’d ever seen, but apparently the investors thought it good enough to front them huge sums of money, all of which paid for this super-secret research department that was four stories underground and didn’t appear in any of the tax documents, or so Haleigh had heard.
 
“I can’t believe Mr. Edwards selected you for this,” said Jennifer, leading her down the windowless hallway. “You’ve been here, what? Six months?”
 
“Eight,” Haleigh corrected. “And I can’t believe it either. I wonder why he chose me.”
 
“Who’s to say? You don’t really have any family. You keep to yourself here. I guess you’re a good candidate to keep it secret.”
 
“Is this thing really that big of a deal?”
 
Jennifer stopped them at the elevator and flashed her an incredulous look. “Just you wait.”
 
A silent elevator ride and another hall later and the girls entered a room that looked like some kind of lounge. There were comfortable chairs and sofas and what looked like a bar to the rear. Jennifer instructed Haleigh to have a seat. Jennifer walked behind the bar, grabbed a silver metal box and then joined Haleigh, placing the box on the table between them.
 
“I need to see your phone for a moment,” said Jennifer. Haleigh, reluctant, but interested, handed it over. “I’m going to download the app you’ll need to make this work. Don’t accidentally delete it because the company keeps track of downloads and it’s not so simple for me to get it back on here for you.”
 
“Okay,” said Haleigh, wondering what this was all about.
 
“There,” said Jennifer, sliding the phone back to Haleigh. She couldn’t tell what the app was that was now downloading to her iPhone, but she watched as Jennifer flipped open the lid of the case, revealing a perfect row of what looked like smartwatches. She lifted one of them out and slid one across to Haleigh. “Put that on.”
 
It didn’t look like anything special. The whole thing was silver and shiny and wrapped around her wrist snuggly with a magnetic clasp. There was a display, much like any normal smartwatch and when the magnets connected around her wrist, bright white letters popped up that read: WAITING . . .
