On his way out, he bumped into the door and the edge of the bag ripped open. A pair of Lila’s shoes tumbled out. As he sat the bag down to collect them, he noticed they’d fallen onto the pile of their other shoes by the door. The goodwill shoes were a pair of Converse and they’d landed on top of an identical pair Lila had worn earlier today.

Evan knelt and compared the shoes—the design was completely the same, but the newest shoes were two sizes bigger.

“What the hell?” he said. He looked at her other shoes stacked by the door—they were all two sizes bigger than the ones in the bag, the ones she was donating to charity. Why were her feet longer?

Evan grabbed a new bag from the kitchen and repackaged the goodwill items, then took them to his car. The entire time his mind was full—he was starting to see a pattern with Lila, something he’d been ignoring for six months.

When he returned to the apartment, he found the bed empty and Lila standing in the doorway to the walk-in closet. She held a black marker in her hand.

“What are you doing?” he asked. But before she could say anything, he noticed the lines and dates scribbled on the door—how had he not seen this before?

The first one was from six months ago. The second from three months ago, and the third was from tonight. Each one was a measurement and each one was an inch apart. Lila was tracking her height—she had grown three inches in the last six months.

When she saw him working it out, she smiled sheepishly and said, in a very small voice, “I think we need to talk about something.”

For the next half an hour, Lila explained everything. She told him about the clinical trials, how she was reluctant to start them, but Sera pressured her. It didn’t take much coaxing—the promised effects were enough to make a five-foot-one Lila ecstatic. She’d grown three inches in six months.

“And we’re about to ramp up the tests,” she said. “I could be as tall as you one day.”
